Interview Strategies - part II

This is going to be a real short one. This post is in continuation from my earlier post (interview strategies - part I), wherein I shared my experience and methods of shortlisting candidates for the post of product manager. In this post I would like to caution interviewers of some Don'ts of telephonic round.

Objectives of telephonic round is to ensure that candidate meets all prerequisites of the role. Telephonic round is like running a small software utility before installing your software to ensure that computer has necessary environment to support your complex product.

Here are my quick thoughts on Don'ts of telephonic round of discussion;
  1. Do not try to judge a candidate over phone (how good a product manager he is?).
  2. Do not discuss any topic in detail
  3. Do not use sophosticated language
  4. Do not check for problem solving skills
  5. Do not challenge a candidate with a case study
  6. Do not use any kind of technical jargons or slangs
  7. Do not ask anything on product strategy or strategic tasks
There are serious limitations of telephonic discussion, and people with eyes will often struggle to explain and understand with voice alone. Consider telephonic round is a check-point and not measurement point, do it in a very simple and straightforward way.

Happy hunting.
